The Dunlop JBF3 Joe Bonamassa Signature Fuzz Face is one of the best fuzz sounds I've ever heard. This pedal was made to be cranked wide open, and the NOS Russian Military Germanium transistors really deliver.

The original Arbiter Electronics Fuzz Face has become something of a legend in the effects pedal world over time. After all, this is a pedal that players from Jimi Hendriz to Eric Johnson has used to help get their signature sound. While the companies that make the Fuzz Face have changed over time, the pedal is still the "holy grail" of fuzz pedals for many. One current devotee is Blues legend Joe Bonamassa, who has partnered with Jim Dunlop to produce a very distinct signature edition. The JB3F ives in a gorgeous copper shell equipped with NOS Germanium transistors. Everything else is standard Fuzz Face layout.

I ran the JBF3 through a Dr. Z MAZ 18 Jr and Dr. Z Route 66, each through a Dr. Z Z-Best Cab. I used both a Gibson Les Paul Traditional and a Fender Eric Johnson Stratocaster. Having used both vintage and contemporary Fuzz Faces before, I knew from previous experience that my favorite fuzz tones came when the pedal was just plain cranked, just like David Gilmour and the pedal's namesake run it. That's not to say that the JBF3 has to be wide open to be effective. For dirty rhythm work, I found that mid-level settings offered nice growl and punch for chords. Not so much for lead work, but when cranked, the JBF3 takes on a life of its own.

Not to be overly critical, but I've found Dunlop reissue Fuzz Face pedals to be, well, less than inspiring in recent years. However, the Bonamassa model is one of the best fuzz sounds I've ever heard. This pedal was made to be cranked wide open, and the NOS Russian Military Germanium transistors really deliver. This particular fuzz isn't the 200 lb violin sound you expect from Eric Johnson. It's more of a "dirty smooth" sound that's a bit on the gritter side. Still, it's a versatile fuzz that could be used a wide variety of gigs. It sounded great with both single coil and humbucking guitars through either clean or dirty amps. It doesn't matter if you play blues, jazz, rock, or country, the MXR reissue '76 Dyna Comp can help you add a new level to both your rhythm chops and your lead lines.

Some effects pedals become the standard by which all others are measured, such as the Ibanez Tube Screamer for overdrive pedals or the Boss CE-1 for choruses. The MXR Dyna Comp holds a similar status amongst compressors. While it lacked several features that pedal lovers now take for granted (power jack, LED, True Bypass switching), it had a tone to die for, and it found its way into pretty much every session guitarist's pedalboard or rack for years (some still swear by the original Dyna Comp). So, when Dunlop (i.e. MXR) found an unused stockpile of CA3080 chips that were the basis of the original Dyna Comp, well, it seemed like a reissue pedal was in order. So, MXR is making a limited run of the 1976 Dyna Comp complete with script logo.

For those of you who don't know, the compression pedal is one of the misunderstood and underused effects around. Ideally, a good compressor will bring evenness to the notes - loud notes get quieter and quiet notes get louder. It's a good way to even out the dynamics and tighten up a signal. Compressors are also useful for getting extra sustain and for adding percusiveness to clean guitar tones (like many country guitarists do). I tested the reissue Dyna Comp with a Tom Anderson Classic (Strat Style) and a PRS McCarty into a reissue Fender Deluxe Reverb. Having played a few original Dyna Comps in my day, I can say that this one is right on the money. It is a thick, rich sound that adds sustain without being agressive. I was able to get all the good effects we expect from compressors (e.g. increased sustain, even dynamics, country cluck) with none of the bad (i.e. increased noise). If you're paranoid about the lack of true bypass, don't be. While I like true bypass on certain pedals, the whole "true bypass meme" is somewhat overrated. That's all to say, the pedal sounds great without it.

Although the lack of certain amenities such as an LED or a power jack might turn some people off, this pedal is the real deal. It doesn't matter if you play blues, jazz, rock, or country, this reissue Dyna Comp can help you add a new level to both your rhythm chops and your lead lines. If you dig the crunchy Marshall-inpsired tones of such music as Bad Company, Thin Lizzy, AC/DC, and Van Halen, then you'd be hard pressed to find a better pedal than the '78 Distortion.

It would be easy for the Dunlop-owned MXR to simply use their name to rest on past accomplishments. After all, this is the company that gave us the Dyna Comp, Phase 90, and Disortion +. Not merely content to live in the past, though, MXR is pressing on with some exciting new designs that are inspired by the past, not just attempts to relive it. Such is the case with the Custom Badass '78, which is a distortion pedal based on an era, not such much a specific pedal. This is a pedal meant to provide tones reminiscent of AC/DC, UFO, and Van Halen.

Enclosed in a standard MXR enclosure, the '78 Distortion sports controls for Output, Tone, and Distortion, as well as a "Crunch" switch. The pedal offers a single input and output, on/off LED, and true bypass switching. The '78 features a TI TLC2264 op amp, which is perhaps largely responsible for the pedal's rich tones. I tested the '78 with a reissue Fender Twin and a reissue Marshall JCM800 and was impressed with the pedal's performance with both amps, but especially the Fender. It was like adding a rich distortion channel to an already loud and powerful clean tone. Engaging the Crunch switch further enhanced the pedal's harmonic qualities, providing ringing overtones and improved definition. The pedal is wel balanced, with full midrange, tight lows, and sparkly highs. The Crunch switch only enhances the pedal's already positive qualities.

If you dig the crunchy Marshall-inpsired tones of such music as Bad Company, Thin Lizzy, AC/DC, and Van Halen, then you'd be hard pressed to find a better pedal than the '78 Distortion. Despite the Axle Grease's limitations regarding delay time and control, it's an incredible value for the money, offering beautifully warm delay tones suitable for rockabilly, surf, country, blues, and rock.

Not too many companies are as budget conscious as celebrated effects pedal masters Visual Sound. The company's top of the line pedals are already affordable, given the craftsmanship and tones provided. Still, the guys at Visual Sound still realize that not everyone can fork out $200 for a decent pedal. Enter the GarageTone line, which offers Visual Sound quality and sound at a price even a kid with a paper route could afford. The Axle Grease is the Garagetone delay.

The Axle Grease has a pretty unique build, in that the delay itself is analog, in the hopes of providing the tonal warmth generally associated with analog delay. The control circuitry, though, is digital. So, it's a hybrid analog/digital pedal. There are three controls - Time (up to 450 ms), Repeat (feedback control) and Level (the mix between dry and wet signals). Like all Garagetone pedals, the housing is sturdy if not a bit drab. A single input and output are available, as is an AC-power jack. The pedal can also be powered via 9-volt if desired.

At 450 ms of delay, it's best to understand from the outset that this isn't the best delay choice if you need long delays for slow solos. It's probably best used for slapback echo or fast delays for speedy passages. Its rhythmic abilities are a bit limited as well. It's not the easiest pedal to get perfectly timed triplets or the like, though settings like "Analog Mayhem" will certainly find devotees. However, for vintage sounding warm delays, the Axle Grease is an excellent choice.

Although fans of traditional wah pedals might be out of their comfort zone with the Wahzoo, the wide variety of sounds and superior build quality make the Voodoo Lab Wahzoo a serious pedal for serious wah users.

Although most musicians know Voodoo Lab as the creators of the Pedal Power 2, the most robust pedalboard power supply available, they also make very high quality, yet affordable effects pedals with a vintage vibe. Some of their pedals, such as the Sparkle Drive, have become modern classics. Others, such as the Wahzoo, are just starting to build up a following. The Wahzoo is Voodoo Lab's entry into the competitive custom wah-wah market. With a unique design and focus, the Wahzoo isn't your daddy's wah.

The first thing you'll notice about the Wahzoo is the pedal casing itself. It's not designed like a traditional wah with the on/off switch in the full up position. While it's likely to throw a few people off, I personally think it's a good move on Voodoo Lab's part. I've accidentally turned off a wah by being a bit too vigorous, so it's nice to have a clear bypass switch. The feel of the treadle is smooth yet solid. Like all Voodoo Lab products, it seems to be built to last.

The Wahzoo contains three very different but useful modes. I tested them with a Gibson Les Paul Traditional and a Fender Reissue '52 Telecaster into a Carr Viceroy. The first mode is Vintage and attempts to emulate a classic Clyde McCoy wah. This is my favorite setting, since I'm a fan of the early wah sound. I was greatly impressed with how Voodoo Lab nailed that early Thomas Organ wah sound.

The next mode, autowah, is one that I would use less often, but that's not to say it's not useful. The envelope is switchable using the treadle position. I'm not a huge fan of any autowah, but the Voodoo Lab implementation is very well done and responds nicely to picking dynamics.

The Stepwah is the most unique and intriguing sound. It reminds me of a Zvex Seek Wah or a keyboard arpeggiator. You use the treadle to cycle through various rhythmic patterns, and you can use the dedicated tap tempo out to sync the pattern with your music. Up to four programmable sequences are available. It sounds more complicated than it really is. In practice, I found the Stepwah very musical and easy to incorporate into a number of tuns.

Although fans of traditional wah pedals might be out of their comfort zone with the Wahzoo, the wide variety of sounds and superior build quality make the Voodoo Lab Wahzoo a serious pedal for serious wah users. The Way Huge Fat Sandwich offers a variety of fuzz, overdrive, and distortion tones in a professionally designed pedal that reeks of quality and road-readiness.

When Jorge Tripps founded Way Huge electronics in 1992, it's safe to say he had no idea what a "boutique" effects pedal was, since such language didn't really enter the vernacular until the rise of the Internet and discussion boards. Though Way Huge closed its doors in 1999, they had already established themselves as a premiere company for unique effects pedals (with unique names). Flash forward to now, and Jim Dunlop has adopted the Way Huge brand and brought Tripps on board to oversee their production. One of the most popular Way Huge pedals is the Fat Sandwich.

The Way Huge Fat Sandwich is a multi-gain stage pedal. Tripps designed it so it would sound like a couple of overdrives or distortions being fed in series. The pedal exterior features controls for Volume, Tone, Distortion, Presence, and Resonance. Internal trim pots control Curve (frequency roll-off for the first clipping stage), High-End (further control over the high-end spectrum), and Drive (controls the second distortion stage). Obviously, this is no half-baked Tube Screamer clone!

Tripps recommends running the Fat Sandwich into a loud clean amp, so I tested it with a reissue Fender Twin Reverb. My first response, playing through a Fender American Deluxe HSS Stratocaster, is that the Fat Sandwich is, for lack of a better phrase, very musical. It's subtitle is "Harmonic Saturator," and I think that's a pretty accurate description. Even single notes take on a richness, a thick tone that's hard to put into words. Also, the controls are very responsive. It's easy to radically change sounds just by making slight adjustments. If you decide to modify the internal trim pots, you could possibly drive yourself mad with all of the tonal options available. The Fat Sandwich can sound like a 60's fuzz, a 70's overdrive, or an 80's distortion, all in the same pedal. It also cleans up very well using the guitar's volume knob, which makes it even more useful.

Kudos to Jim Dunlop for resurrecting a company and a line of pedals that offers something more than just a repackaged Tube Screamer.
